Nintendo Announces More Press Events [ Nintendo of Japan ]

Nintendo of Japan announced today that, to go along with the press conference concerning the DS on October 7th, Nintendo will have two more press conferences on October 13th and 14th. Rather than concentrate on the DS, these two conferences will be more centered on the holiday lineups and strategies for the GameCube and Game Boy Advance, including finalized release dates and possible new footage of games such as Mario Party 6, Mario Power Tennis, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, and for the GBA, Yoshi's Universal Gravitation. Also, Nintendo said there will be some games unveiled for the first time at these events. Keep it here for more information as the days of all of these conferences draw closer.

SP Sales Up in UK [ Nintendo of Europe ]

As if the US sales increases weren't enough, Nintendo's Game Boy Advance SP flew off the shelves in the UK this weekend following its first ever price drop. Retailing since Friday 24th September at the new price of Ł69.99, Nintendo UK has today reported a record sales uplift for the handheld console that continues to lead the market, with sales in the UK up over 150% compared to the same period the previous week, with some retailers seeing hardware sales leap by over 400%.

Software sales also received a significant boost this weekend with a 36% increase in sales across the Game Boy Advance software range. David Yarnton, General Manager, Nintendo UK said, "The UK installed base for the Game Boy Advance SP now totals over 1.2 million. Since we launched the Game Boy Advance SP in March 2003, the console has exceeded all expectations and continues to go from strength to strength. This recent price drop enables us to offer gamers everywhere the Game Boy Advance SP at its most affordable price ever."

Pokémon Continues to Sell [ Nintendo ]

Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, both released Sept. 7 for Game Boy Advance SP, combined to sell more than 1 million units in North America within the first 21 days of its availability. Since its Sept. 2 price drop to an MSRP of $79.99, Game Boy Advance SP sales are up 70 percent.

"The key to success in our industry is no secret," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "When you offer great interactive entertainment at a great price, players respond in droves."

Part of the impressive sales success of these two new games can be attributed to the inclusion of the new Game Boy Advance Wireless Adapter, with wireless communication technology from Freescale Semiconductor, which lets players trade and battle their Pokémon or simply engage in a wireless chat. Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen also includes cross compatibility with Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire, as well as Pokémon Colosseum for GameCube, allowing players to trade and battle more than 300 Pokémon.

Nintendo Gets Animated? [ Gamespot ]

In a press conference earlier today, former Nintendo president and current advisor Hiroshi Yamauchi said he plans to propose that Nintendo enter the realm of animation as well as games, and will bring up the proposal at next month's Nintendo business conference. Don't get your hopes up too much for a Zelda or Mario anime though - Yamauchi said he'd like to see the first project be an anime based on the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, an anthology of Japanese poetry from the feudal period ranging from the 7th to 13th century. That said, Yamauchi did not close out the possibility of animated films based on Nintendo properties, and for Nintendo to take more control over it's current properties in animated form - Nintendo's Pokemon series is licensed to another production company.

Nintendo Adds to Player's Choice [ Nintendo ]

Toys R US has recently put up flyers that will include the following games into Nintendo's already huge list of popular Player's Choice titles: Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Super Mario Sunshine, and Animal Crossing. Those games will debut on the Player's Choice list for $29.99. But the deal gets much better. Every current Nintendo Player's Choice games that is $29.99 will be going down to $19.99. The deal still gets better. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker will also be added to Player's Choice but will immediately drop down to $19.99. These changes will go into effect sometime early October. These price changes are an attempt to eliminate the $29.99 price for Nintendo Player's Choice and have every Player's Choice game go to $19.99 in the future.

The REAL Mushroom Kingdom makes its triumphant return bringing out the 3rd installment in the series. 2 months of hard, slave work and obstacles galore translates to about 8 minutes of animation. Hopefully unwasted! Check out the latest in this dramatically insane series following Mario's quest to retrieve Peach's virginity! Rated PG-13 for excessive 'shrooming.

PSP Price Point? [ GameCube Café ]

As you all may know, the TGS event in Japan has kicked off with a big PSP presence. We have discovered from very reliable sources that the PSP will have an official price of 38,624 Yen, or $349.99. Sony commented on the PSP not being an actual competitor to the DS after the price was announced (like the Xbox and GCN aren't either), but you know it'll happen. Other sites can't post this because non-disclosure agreements signed with Sony. But as you can imagine, we signed no such thing. So if Sony doesn't like us Nintendo people now... well, we're hurt. We're really hurt.

So Why Don't You Introduce Yourself? [ GameCube Café ]

Oh boy, this is like being the new kid in high school all over again. Ok, I’ll stand and give you the normal spiel. My name is Nick Basile. I’ve been gaming in all of its forms since I was 5 years old. Being 20 as of my last count, that would give me 15 years of ‘experience’ in the gaming world. I’ve been a lifelong Nintendo fan since I first picked up that old, uncomfortable NES controller back during the Christmas of 1989. Since then, I’ve expanded my horizons to include other systems, such as the PS and PC. Genre wise, I’m an RPG freak, but I also love action games, platformers and fighting games. I’ll try to give an honest and unbiased opinion on every game I write about and hopefully I can help you, the reader, in any decisions you might have. Well, that’s really all for now. Hope to see ya around soon.

Co-Op Third Age [ IGN Cube ]

It seems the Lord of the Rings RPG, The Third Age, will support more than one player when it ships in November. Incorporated into the game is an option that will allow players to switch between one or two users. Player one will have control of Barethor, Elegost, and Morwen. Player two will have control of Idrial, Hadhod, and Ioden. Check out IGN's new video of the process if you're a bit confused.

Happy Birthday Kevin [ GameCube Café ]

Today our always pleasant Editor In Chief turns 20 years old. Kevin has been with us since the begining of it all. By that I don't mean since the start of the Café, I'm talking about the glorious days of when we worked at that other website (which shall remain nameless). That was a little over three years ago now and back then I remember talking with Kevin about how Carl, myself, and him would stick together no matter what. Now look at us, here we are still working together. When our previous Editor In Chief up and left only after a month of working here since we opened we desperately needed someone with a lot of intelligence to fill his position. Kevin stepped up for the job and has done a fantastic job for us since. He is one of the major arteries pumping blood into the life of this website and business. We can always trust Kevin to get stuff done on time and to beat the other staffers physically and emotionally (Jones) to make sure they get done what needs to get done. Having Kevin as part of the Café family sure does make my life a lot easier and I love him like a brother for it. May the ladies and beer be plentiful on this glorious day that is your birthday.

RE4 PAL Box Art [ Capcom ]

Capcom today has released the final box art for Resident Evil for Europe. The box art is much darker and mysterious than the North American version. I for one actually like it better than the North American version. The only thing that slightly concerns me is that there is no "only For" logo on the box. However, that will more than likely be put on later seeing as how Capcom has said numerous times that RE4 is Cube exclusive. Click the link for the image.

Final Price and Date for DS! - UPDATED AGAIN [ Nintendo ]

From the very start, Nintendo DS broke the existing rules of video game play. Two screens, not one. Wireless connection for game play and personal communication for the sheer entertainment of it. Flexible game control by voice and touch, not just with buttons. Nintendo's newest innovation, Nintendo DS, will make its worldwide debut in North American stores on Nov. 21, and then in Japan on Dec. 2. It will sell at an MSRP of $149.99, making it an immediate mass-market attraction. Nintendo DS will become the company's first system ever to make its sales debut outside of Japan.

As previously hoped, the DS will come WITH Pictochat absolutely free, embedded into the system hardware! The complete lineup of games planned for the launch of Nintendo DS will be announced in the near future. In effect, Nintendo DS already boasts a library of more than 550 games because it is compatible with single-player modes of games made for the world's best-selling video game system, Game Boy Advance SP.

Nintendo chose the United States to lead the worldwide launch of Nintendo DS because of overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic reaction from consumers and to take advantage of the holiday sales season. After the subsequent launch in Japan, the system will be available in Europe and Australia in the first quarter of 2005.

UPDATE! A report from USA Today by respected gaming journalist Steven Kent had this to say: "Nintendo's price will include a pack-in game called Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt as well as PictoChat, communications software that lets users send messages and drawings to each other." There was no mention of Hunters in Nintendo's press release, so this is still unconfirmed. The addition of the subtitle "First Hunt" may mean that this is simply a demo of the game, but until we get official word from Nintendo, there's no way to know what this could mean.

REUPDATE! We can now confirm that "Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt" is indeed a demo of the game we saw at E3 and will come packaged with the system.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory delayed for XBox/PC [ Gamespot ]

Ubisoft announced today that, apparantly to avoid the over-saturation of numerous major games released this holiday season, that the PC and XBox versions of the highly anticipated 3rd Splinter Cell game, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, have been pushed back from November to March, when the PS2 and GameCube versions of the game will be released. Why is this important? Because up until this point Ubisoft hadn't even CONFIRMED a GameCube version (although there really wasn't much doubt that there would be one), and it is also good to see it will be released simultaneously with the other versions of the game.

Nintendo Sets Date for DS Press Conference [ Gamefront ]

German gaming site Gamefront is reporting that, according to the Bloomberg press agency, Nintendo will hold its highly-anticipated press conference concerning the Nintendo DS on October 17th. Nintendo will have the DS available for demonstration, as well as (hopefully) reveal its final price, release date, and finalized release dates for both 1st and 3rd party software. Both President Satoru Iwata and Managing Director (and resident god) Shigeru Miyamoto will be on hand as well to take questions. It's going to be hard to wait for this big event, but until then, feast your eyes on a new image of Nintendo's revolutionary handheld.

A Slew of New SP's [ IGN Game Boy ]

It looks as if the trend of endless amounts of Limited Edition Game Boy Advance SP's that are commonplace in Japan are making their way westward as well, as Nintendo has announced that three new Limited Edition Game Boy Advance SP's will be released later this year. The first will be based upon Nintendo's new "Who Are You?" slogan, and will be colored black with the slogan in a graffiti style on top. It also seems that this will be the second store exclusive GBA SP - similar to how the Tribal GBA SP is only slated to be sold at EB Games, the Who Are You? version will be exclusive to Wal-Mart stores.

The next two GBA SP's will be based on Nintendo's two biggest franchises - Mario and Zelda. The Mario version will be gray and red with Mario's familiar insignia emblazened on the top, while the Zelda version will be gold, topped off with the familiar Triforce. Both systems will coincide with the European releases of Mario Vs. Donkey Kong and The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, and will be sold in two-packs with their respective game. However, as of now these two are European exclusives, so those that really want them might have to inquire at their nearest import store. For pictures of these sure to be big sellers, check out IGN Game Boy by clicking the link above, and checking each news story.

Mario Tennis Gets a Title? [ GameStop ]

GameStop is now listing the GameCube of Mario Tennis as...

...wait for it...

Mario Power Tennis.

Obviously no confirmation yet from Nintendo, but with the release of the lovely tennis game less than two months away, a title is needed soon. I suppose this very well could be the new title, although I was expecting Nintendo to tack on a subtitle a la Mario Golf. Maybe something like Mario Tennis: Koopledon Championship. Alright, so that's not a good example. Could explain why Nintendo might be going with a simpler title though...

Namco to release new Tales game for GBA [ Gamespot ]

Namco will reveal on Monday a brand new RPG in the long-running Tales series in the latest issue of Shonen Jump magazine. The game will be the third installment in the Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon series for the Game Boy Advance, tentively titled Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon III. Although the previous two games did not receive a U.S. release, it is highly possible the third game may see our shores due to the popularity of the GameCube RPG Tales of Symphonia.

Mario Party 6 Details [ Gamespot ]

In a brief announcement this morning, Nintendo revealed some details about the newest installment of the Mario Party line. With the release of Mario Party 6 scheduled for December 6th of this year, it seems Nintendo decided to change some core properties.

- Thankfully, the entire cast from Mario Part 5 is returning.

- Gameplay has been sped up to minimize the boring breaks between the gameboard and the mini-games.

- A new day-to-night feature has been implemented that will change the nature of both the large board, as well as the mini-games.

- Most interesting of the information is the addition of a proprietary microphone controller, named the "Nintendo GameCube Mic." All we can tell about the microphone now is that there will be a seperate "mic mode" where players will answer quiz questions. The microphone will come packaged with the game.

Also, our friends over at GCAdvanced managed to get their hands on a scan from Famitsu Magazine in Japan, which apparently shows what the mic will look like. Interestingly, it seems to come as a Memory Card attachment and not a controller. Whether this means you'll be able to save data on the card is not yet clear, but it certainly provides interesting ideas. Click here to see the scan on GCA.

Nintendo and Parents Encourage Pokémon [ Nintendo ]

A survey of nearly 2,100 parents confirms what Nintendo has known all along: Pokémon video games help kids learn important core values and skills. Nintendo commissioned Impulse Research Corp. to conduct the survey to coincide with today's launch of two new highly anticipated video games, Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen for Game Boy Advance.

"We're proud to be a part of a video game franchise that parents believe helps boost important skills, like teamwork and memory, that can translate to kids excelling in school," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "And, with the new Game Boy Advance Wireless Adapter bundled with Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, players now can expand their abilities even further by testing their brain power against many other players simultaneously."

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within Videos [ GameCube Café ]

With every video and every screenshot I see of this game, it just keeps getting more and more violent as well as bloody. Whereas the first game, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, left out the blood and gruesomeness to get a T rating, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within is a definitate M rating. Sure the ESRB has yet to assign an official rating to the game but if you had any doubts before then you need to watch these two videos. Now the point of them isn't to show how violent the game is, it is to demonstrate how you can you use the surrounding environment to your advantage against the enemeies that are currently blocking your path. The second video shows how you can grab ahold of the enemy and do a variety of different moves to kill. Enough of my babbling, click the links to stream the video or right click and save them to your hard drive.
