World of Mana Coming to DS [ Square-Enix ]

A while back, we reported that Square-Enix had trademarked the name "World of Mana", and, since the company had announced it was bringing a Mana game to the DS, figured that this would be said game. However, it was revealed two weeks ago that World of Mana, which would be shown at Square-Enix Party 2005, would only be for the PS2.

However, it turns out Square was pulling our legs a bit. It was revealed today that World of Mana will not only be coming out for PS2, but there is a DS version in the works as well. Only some concept art and a short trailer were shown for the upcoming title, but it was revealed that World of Mana will hit both platforms, as well as possibly others with the promise of "multiple genres". We hope to learn more about World of Mana, including a possible release date, when Square-Enix makes that information available.

Nintendo to Keynote Tokyo Game Show [ Famitsu ]

According to an update at Famitsu's website, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata will deliver a keynote speech at this year's Tokyo Game Show on September 16th. This announcement is surprising given that Nintendo has no plans to showcase their company's products at this year's event (as usual). Initial speculation would point to this keynote speech finally being the event where Iwata finally divulges all Revolution details, including videos, games, and of course, the ever-mysterious controller. Either way, you can expect GameCube Café to offer full coverage of this speech when TGS rolls around.

The country's best blend of cool music, hot video games and raw energy soon will visit a city near you. The 2005 Nintendo Fusion Tour kicks off its fall tour on Sept. 28 in Detroit, and will play nearly 40 other U.S. dates before the tour wraps up on Nov. 23. Fall Out Boy's new album, From Under the Cork Tree, has recently been certified gold since its release two months ago. The first single, "Sugar, We're Going Down," has been racing up the modern rock charts, while the video has been getting heavy play on MTV, including a No. 1 rank on TRL. Chicago's favorite sons have come a long way since their indie debut on Fueled by Ramen Records in 2003.

EGM Interviews Iwata and Miyamoto [ Electronic Gaming Monthly ]

Both Nintendo President Satoru Iwata and Executive Producer Shigeru Miyamoto were interviewed by Electronic Gaming Monthly recently to discuss numerous topics, and reveal a few more choice details about the upcoming Revolution console. According to Iwata, although the system will not support high-definition games, all Revolution games will be required to support 480p Progressive Scan, so games will still be playable on high-def TV sets in a widescreen format. Also, the attachment announced at E3 to give the system DVD-playing capability will be inserted inside the machine, so players won't notice it. In regards to the system's online capability, the Revolution will be Wi-Fi compatible out of the box, but will initially not have a Ethernet port. However, an adapter will be sold that will make use of the Revolution's USB ports to connect to an Ethernet system. Nintendo is also looking into DS-to-Revolution connectivity via Wi-Fi.

In regards to games, Miyamoto states that Nintendo is considering making a DS version of the ultra-popular Super Smash Brothers series. Miyamoto is currently hard at work at both the new Mario game for Revolution (which he confirms is the game that was Mario 128) as well as his new project, which was announced at E3. Miyamoto says he would like to use the much-overlooked Luigi in a new game, and is considering making a new Pikmin title for Revolution considering that the still-mysterious controller would be perfect for the game. Plus, he's looking into doing something with the long stagnant GameCube tech demo Stage Debut, which allowed players to map their faces into games. Also, Iwata states that the company is looking into adding online play into many of the downloadable Nintendo games that will be available on Revolution, and also confirms that the Revolution controller, since it will be able to play 4 generations of Nintendo console games, will not be so vastly different that it alienates developers and third-parties.

Some good stuff here, but Nintendo is still keeping its trap shut on the big mystery - what the hell the Revolution's long-enigmatic controller actually IS. Hopefully we'll get that question out of the way in the coming weeks.

Miyamoto and Aonuma Reveal More on Zelda [ RESET Magazine ]

In an interview with Swedish gaming publication RESET, Shigeru Miyamoto and producer Eiji Aonuma revealed some more choice details on the biggest title to come out this year, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. First and foremost, they admitted that many of the things that were tried with Wind Waker were mistakes, such as the massive ocean, lack of dungeons, and the tedious Triforce hunt. For Twilight Princess, the game will have a long and complex storyline, a varied atmosphere (some parts of the game will be darker than usual, while some will be very light-hearted in tone), and "more dungeons, many more" according to Miyamoto. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will hit stores at the end of the year for the Nintendo GameCube, and you can be sure that GameCube Café will be your home base for all things Zelda in the coming months.

New Pokémon Info Revealed [ Serebii.net ]

Serebii.net has posted new information from Korokoro Magazine on upcoming Pokémon games. Diamond and Pearl, the upcoming titles for the Nintendo DS, contrary to speculation, will not be released in November 2005, but rather in 2006. Diamond and Pearl will contain no new Pokémon types, but some new combinations of types. Also, Pokémon from Fire Red, Leaf Green, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald can be transferred to Diamond and Pearl. There will be new critters as well, some pre-evolutions and evolutions of existing Pokemon, and of course there will be some totally new ones. Up to sixteen players will be able to connect wirelessly. Also revealed was information on Pokémon Ranger - The Path to Diamond and Pearl, the name of the next anime series and 9th movie to possibly coincide with Diamond and Pearl's release. This is only a project name, however, and it will probably change. There may also be a game to be released with the Pokémon Ranger series, but that isn't quite clear as of now.

Lots of great new details. We'll keep you up-to-date as always.

A Rare Occurence [ Rareware ]

Well, I think for a lot of people Rare support for the DS was looking slim-to-nil. But as it turns out, that's not quite so. Clicking on the "Join Us" section on Rare's site will bring up a couple of ads wanting people to work on DS games. It'll be interesting to see what kind of games Rare creates for the DS, and how many there will be (since we all know Rare has created more games for Nintendo than Microsoft since they were purchased, go figure). We'll keep you informed, as always.

RE On DS? [ NGC Magazine ]

NGC Magazine has recently had a very interesting article in their most recent issue. The article suggests that the original Playstation Resident Evil will be remade (yes, again), this time for the Nintendo DS. The game will make use of the DS's touch screen by allowing the player to target and fire at zombies and other oddities. You will also get to use the touch screen when using the knife to slash at zombies. The biggest change will be the way the character is controlled. Capcom is said to be thinking about abandoning the classic third person view from the original game and going with a more over the shoulder type view that was featured in Resident Evil 4. Lastly, NGC Magazine has said that some of the puzzles would be reinvented or completely redone to take advantage of the DS touch screen. We will keep you up to date on this in the future.

Woman Nabbed in Counterfeit GBA Game Scam [ ELSPA ]

A 40-year-old Birmingham woman has been found importing counterfeit GBA cartridges and selling them over eBay, following an investigation by Birmingham City Council Trading Standards Department and ELSPA. The seller had been importing the counterfeit cartridges from Hong Kong and bringing them into the country through Coventry airport. Offering them for between $20-45, they far exceeded the typical cost of a counterfeit game.

The offender came to the attention of authorities back in December last year after a member of the public complained they had bought an apparently genuine GBA game, only to discover it was a copy. ELSPA's internet investigator subsequently made a series of test purchases from the woman's eBay page, working closely with Birmingham City Council Trading Standards. Trading Standards officers, assisted by ELSPA, searched her house in Sutton Coldfield to reveal a substantial number of counterfeit GBA cartridges, the majority of which were Mario titles. Records showed she had conducted almost 400 transactions over a period of 12 months. The woman made a full and frank admission when interviewed.

Electric Blue DS Sparks Sales [ Nintendo ]

Major retailers are reporting sales of Nintendo DS units have increased 86 percent over the weekly average. The spike can be attributed to a special bundle featuring the new Electric Blue version of Nintendo DS that comes with a copy of the top-selling DS game, Super Mario 64 DS. Since the launch of Nintendo DS in November, more than 1 million copies of Super Mario 64 DS have sold, making it the most popular DS game available.

The Electric Blue DS debuted on June 6 and the special bundle offer runs at select retailers through July 31. Although the bundle focuses on Electric Blue editions of Nintendo DS, retailers also will honor the bundle with the Titanium color Nintendo DS.

Strong DS sales are anticipated through the end of the year, buoyed by Nintendogs, which launches on Aug. 22. The pet simulation lets DS owners raise and train a lifelike puppy chosen from one of 18 popular breeds.

Nintendo Last in Next-Gen? [ IGN Cube ]

In a recent shareholder's meeting dealing with numerous Nintendo concerns, naturally questions came to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata on the topic of Nintendo's next console, the Revolution - especially among rumors that it would launch late next-gen after both the XBox 360 and Playstation 3 had established themselves. Iwata responded by admitting that yes, the console may be a little behind, but not extremely late. He also addressed fears that the console would be lacking software from the outset, but stated that most key titles have been decided upon, and release dates are being chosen for each. We'll keep you posted if any new news on the Nintendo Revolution breaks.
