The nominees for the Game Critics Awards for the best of E3 2005 were announced today, and several Nintendo titles received nods. Obviously enough, the big hit from Nintendo's camp was The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which received 3 nominations - Best Action-Adventure Game, Best Console Game, and the coveted Best in Show. It will go up against F.E.A.R., Spore, Gears of War, and the XBox 360 in that category. Nintendogs also recieved a trio of nominations, with nods for Best Simulation Game, Best Handheld Game, and Most Original Game. Other Nintendo nominees were Mario Kart DS (Best Racing Game, Best Handheld Game), Mario Party 7 (Best Puzzle/Trivia/Parlor Game), Meteos (Best Puzzle/Trivia/Parlor Game), Yoot Saito's Odama (Best Puzzle/Trivia/Parlor Game), as well as the Game Boy Micro, which will go up against the XBox 360, Playstation 3, and Gizmondo in the Best Peripheral/Hardware category (The Revolution was not nominated due to the lack of tech demos and hands-on-play for the console). Nintendo third-party games receiving nominations were Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects (EA, Best Fighting Game), Peter Jackson's King Kong (Ubisoft, Best Action/Adventure Game), Need for Speed Most Wanted (EA, Best Racing Game), Trauma Center: Under the Knife (Atlus, Best Simulation Game), Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland (Activision, Best Sports Game), and Madden NFL 06 (EA, Best Sports Game). The winners will be announced on June 7th, so check back here at the Café on that date to see if any of your favorites received awards. Next Generation Console Survey [ Famitsu ]

Famitsu Weekly has done a survey about the next generation consoles. They found the following:

Most Interested Next Generation Console
1. Nintendo Revolution - 42.2%
2. Sony PlayStation 3 - 39.8%
3. Microsoft Xbox 360 - 18.0%

Why do you like Revolution?
- Compact design, typical Nintendo style
- Able to download Famicom (NES), SFC (SNES) and Nintendo 64 games
- Possible innovative / new designs in Revolution
- Confidence in the hardware

Why do you like PlayStation 3?
- Outstanding technical specifications, standout against other next generation consoles
- Downward compatibility with PSone and PlayStation 2
- Cell processor and Bluray support are unique to the console
- Like the design of the console (but the controller design is crazy)

Why do you like Xbox 360?
- Developer support is splendid, especially people like Akira Toriyama and Sakaguchi
- Square Enix supports the console
- Positive console design, color, technical specs and software lineup
- Console can stand vertically

Definitely some interesting finds, especially the Revolution beating out the PS3. It's still not too surprising that the Xbox 360 has the least interest, given the Xbox isn't the most popular system in Japan. It will be fun to see how things pan out.

Nintendo Bundles GameCube with Melee [ Gamespot ]

In an interview with Gamespot, Nintendo vice president George Harrison confirms that the company will bundle the Nintendo GameCube with its most popular game, Super Smash Brothers Melee, for sale starting in August at the usual GameCube price of $99.99. Also, Harrison confirms that the company is looking into making the Play-Yan, the currently Japan-only device that allows for MP3 as well as MP4 video playaback on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, possibly for a U.S. launch along with the new Game Boy Micro. Expect more info as it becomes available.

Nintendo Doubles Profits [ Reuters ]

Nintendo has announced that the first three months of the year 2005 have seen the company swimming in green. Due to the immense sales of the company's new Nintendo DS platform, Nintendo has announced that the company's profits have jumped to a mind-boggling 87.42 million yen, more than two and a half times greater than the 33.19 million Nintendo saw in the entire year of 2004. However, Nintendo isn't expecting the money to roll in for long, as due to sales drops for the Game Boy Advance (Game Boy Micro not withstanding) and GameCube, the company expects profits to decline by approximately 14 percent, even with DS sales expected to double to around 12.4 million worldwide by the end of the year. Don't feel too bad for the Big N though - this is merely a natural progression all the console makers will probably face as the next generation of consoles approaches.

Sayonara, Factor 5 [ C|Net ]

Hope is lost that Factor 5 stopped GameCube development to make games for its successor, the Revolution. Factor 5 has apparently also turned its back to the 360, and instead will be developing exclusively for the PS3. One of the main factors in this decision is the power of the PS3. Although I imagine that with their work on the GCN, they should be able to make some really purdy games on the PS3. Sad news to hear, but not necessarily unexpected.

Nintendo Puts Twist on GBA SP [ Nintendo ]

Nintendo is getting ready to put a new twist on how gamers play with their Game Boy Advance SP with the upcoming releases of WarioWare: Twisted! and Yoshi Topsy-Turvy. Game play has been given a whole new meaning with the development of two innovative sensors that detect motion which challenge players to move their GBA SP in order to progress through each game.

WarioWare: Twisted! is just as frantically paced as the original smash hit! The gyro sensor enables gamers to play through over 200 all-new microgames and unlock more than 130 souvenirs from Diamond City, including bonus games, moveable figurines, music, instruments and many other novelties. WarioWare: Twisted!, rated E for Everyone, twists off on the Game Boy Advance SP May 23, 2005 and will sell for an MSRP of $34.99.

Yoshi Topsy-Turvy brings back fan-favorite Yoshi in a whole new adventure. By moving your Game Boy Advance SP, the built-in tilt sensor allows you to tip the environment knocking over enemies, swinging pendulums, and helping Yoshi run up walls and leap huge pits. Yoshi Topsy-Turvy for Game Boy Advance SP will roll onto store shelves on June 13, 2005, is rated E for Everyone, and will sell for an MSRP of $34.99.

New Lower Price on E3 DVD [ GameCube Café ]

Hi guys, this message is going to be a little personal and I hope you read it all the way through. The E3 DVD is what we had planned to sustain the life of the Café and pre-order expectations are not what we had expected them to be. We have outgrown the ability for Carl and me to pay for the costs to maintain the site ourselves each month. I think you all have come to realize our unwillingness to go down the path of advertising. It slows the site down to a point where it would not be easy to view our content. In the past Carl and I just paid the little money to keep the site up; now costs are extreme and we really cannot keep going without your help. We have lowered the cost of the DVD to $11.99 and that includes free shipping. We ask you that if you enjoy the Café and want to continue to see our coverage of Nintendo then please go to our store and buy one of the E3 DVDs. We have decided to forgo putting the Nintendo Media Briefing on the DVD in exchange for all of the Zelda footage we have; about ninety minutes uncut. There will still be highlights of the Media Briefing on the DVD (only the good parts, and there weren’t many). However, you will still be able to see the Nintendo Media Briefing in full for free right here on the site next week. Thank you guys for listening and understanding.

Geist Delayed Again [ Nintendo ]

We were getting so close to the release of this game, too. Geist, which has been delayed more times than should be legal, has once again been pushed back. Previously expected to come out next month, Nintendo's media site now lists the game as slated for release in August. No specific date was given, but on the bright side it does say 2005. We'll keep an eye out for an official date whenever it may come.

Iwata Speaks Revolution [ Reuters ]

Nintendo plans to announce the price, launch date and other details for its next-generation game console by the end of the year, its president said on Thursday. Nintendo earlier this week unveiled its console, code-named "Revolution," and said it will launch in 2006, giving users access to more than 20 years of games from past Nintendo consoles. The Revolution, roughly the size of three stacked DVD cases, will feature wireless controllers, built-in wireless Internet access, and an add-on for DVD playback.

"We plan to give details on when we will launch it, what the price will be, what the controller will look like and how games can be played on it by the end of the year," said Nintendo's Satoru Iwata, speaking to Reuters at the Electronic Entertainment Expo annual trade show, known as E3.

Some gamers and industry analysts had criticized Nintendo for providing sparse details on the new machine, comparing it to Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp.'s unveiling of slicker, graphic-intense next-generation machines. But Iwata said he didn't want to tip his hand to rivals. Iwata said the new console is aimed at customers who hate clutter and find current games and the controllers used to play them to be confusing and difficult. Hit the source link the read the entire press release at Reuters.

We assure you that there will indeed be a lot more exclusive gameplay trailers on the site in the next few days. We will have a decent size update later this morning/early afternoon.
