Ubisoft Entering Sports Gaming [ Ubisoft ]
|
Ubisoft has announced that they will begin to publish games in the sports genre, and has purchased Microsoft's array of sports title properties, including NFL Fever, NBA Inside Drive, MLB Inside Pitch, and NHL Rivals - including source codes. The first game to come from Ubisoft's new sports division will be a golf game headlined by world #1 Vijay Singh, top rival to Tiger Woods, who is currently contracted by EA for their series of golf titles. Indeed, this move looks like yet another scene in the ongoing Ubisoft/EA drama, as Ubisoft is once again sticking it to the company that owns a large percentage of them. No word on release dates on any of Ubisoft's sports games, but we'll keep you posted on this and future developments.

GBA2 at E3? [ CNN ]
|
That's what's being said: The Game Boy Advance 2 will debut at E3 and launch at the end of the year. Apparently Nintendo will evolve the DS into a PDA and gaming machine both (what the recent licensing of a PDA OS), and continue the third pillar deal by launching the GBA2--successor to the GBA. Not only this, but the GBA2 seems like it will be a heck of a monster, being based around GameCube hardware. The system will have a high-quality, back-lit screen, and Revolution connectivity. Oh yeah, and it would launch at the mind-blowing price point of only $99. CNN is claiming confirmation could come as early as March 10. We'll keep you updated.

Pennant Chase Baseball Screens [ Nintendo ]
|
Nintendo's newest baseball title will be released on GameCube April 4th. Pennant Chase Baseball is Nintendo's attempt to break into a a genre that they have ignored for the past ten plus years. Below are screenshots of the game taken off of a television, so they don't look all that spectacular. The final build of the game will have graphics comparable to the other baseball games out for the 2005 season. Gameplay dynamics are sketchy as Nintendo has yet to really release anything. Click the links to view the images.

Nintendo has announced that starting this weekend, Japanese DS owners will be able to go to their favorite game retailer and try out new software by downloading it onto their DS systems by way of special kiosks. The first downloadable content Nintendo will offer includes demos of puzzle games Meteos and Chokkan Hitofude (known in the States as Polarium), as well as new playable songs for Dagasso! Band Brothers (known in the States as Jam with the Band). The demos will be playable until the DS's power is turned off, except for the new Band Brothers songs, which will remain in the game permanently. This sounds amazingly cool, and hopefully Nintendo will consider bringing this innovative idea to North America soon.

Unlike the previous two games in the Splinter Cell series, Chaos Theory will in fact be rated M. Given the official rating a few weeks back I was still unsure if the game deserved such a rating. However, now viewing the new NSA Training video has shown me that this game is definitely for Mature gamers only. Pandora Tomorrow sold quite well but Ubisoft has obviously seen that these days, Mature games sell better. Just look at Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. It sold more copies than Sands of Time in its first week on shelves. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory will be released across all platforms on March 29th. Pokémon Emerald Screenshots [ Nintendo ]
|
Collecting, trading and battling is what traditional Pokémon games are all about. This game offers players an opportunity to hone their skills and prove their abilities. Pokémon Emerald is an extension of Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire, and shares the ultimate goal of stopping the expansion of either the Team Magma or Team Aqua realm. Players must keep balance in the world of Hoenn, where Team Magma or Team Aqua is trying to use Groudon (ground) or Kyogre (water) to try and take over. Rayquaza (sky) will help maintain this balance. Trainers will need to use their best battling strategies ever, because this game offers the most challenging Battle fields presented in a Pokémon game. Pokémon Emerald is the first Hoenn Pokémon adventure to allow players to trade and battle wirelessly.

Nintendo Enjoys Number 1 Game of January [ Nintendo ]
|
Capcom's pulse-pounding Resident Evil 4, made exclusively for Nintendo GameCube beat all other video games in January sales. It's also one of the best-reviewed games in years. The sales boom no doubt has been driven by reviews that call the game "an absolute must-have," "an amazing achievement" and "early contender for game of the year." Resident Evil 4 boasts no fewer than 30 perfect ratings from magazine and online reviewers, and some 55 others that rate it at 90 percent or higher.
But if crazed townsfolk and monstrous creatures aren't your thing, Nintendo has plenty of other top-selling games to keep you occupied. According to the NPD Group's January sales tracking report, each Nintendo video game system had at least one game in January's top 10 sellers. In addition to Resident Evil 4 at No. 1, Nintendo continued its dominance of the hand-held market with The Legend of Zelda®: The Minish Cap for Game Boy Advance SP at No. 3 overall, Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for GBA SP at No. 9 and Super Mario 64 DS for Nintendo DS at No. 10.

The DS Gets Ready to Catch 'Em All [ PokéLord ]
|
Apparently in the newest Nihon Keizai Shimbun magazine in Japan, Eizo Nakano of The Pokémon Company gives a projected launch date for Pokémon Diamond and Pearl on the Nintendo DS. For Japan, the two games would release before the end of this year in November. As is typical with Pokémon games, there's a lag of a few months for translation and other things. With that said, the projected date for North America is March 2006. A year from now isn't too bad of a wait, right?

Japan's creation of an Information Self Defense Force is deemed a violation of international law and of their own Constitution and ignites rising tensions between Japan, China and North Korea. Facing North Korean and Chinese blockades of shipping across the Korea Strait, Japan requests US assistance in accordance with American obligations under Article 9 of the Japanese Post War Constitution. Mounting evidence gathered by the I-SDF indicates that the devastation of the Japanese economy on the now infamous ‘Black Gold Day’ may have been caused by intentional Information Warfare attacks.
As nations begin to mobilize and the United States activates the USS Clarence E Walsh, the world’s premiere Electronic and Information Warfare platform and dispatches her to the region, Third Echelon gets wind of a small and seemingly unrelated incident that may end up having global repercussions. Players take on the role of Harman Smith an unlikely assassin who leads a life as the intermediary link between seven alter egos. Switching between his seven different personalities, Harman employs each character's abilities to terminate targets he deems "deserving to die." Now a powerful underworld kingpin has unleashed violent creatures called 'Heaven’s Smile.' These crazed soldiers, affixed with horrific smiles, have started to wreak havoc on city streets destroying anything unlucky enough to cross its path and overtaking the minds of the populace. It is up to the player to interchange Harman’s seven 'partners' and utilize the special powers that dwell within them in order to assassinate Kun Lan, the notorious criminal overlord behind all the madness.

Eiji Aonuma recently gave an interview to Libération magazine and explained some upcoming things about The Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo DS and GameCube. Right now this is simply speculation and rumor but when we confirm this we will notify you. Aonuma said that Nintendo was definitely working on a DS version of Zelda and that the success of the Four Swords has really made them go for a full-out handheld version of the game (like GameCube's Four Swords). The dual screen style of the Nintendo DS makes a Four Swords game ideal for the hot new handheld. Aonuma also stated that the new Legend of Zelda for GameCube was practically finished and that it would continue the Wind Waker storyline. Other than that no story or title was revealed but he assured us that the game would release in Japan for the Holiday season of 2005, and that the game was "very beautiful" (as if we didn't know that already). If that is true, we can expect the game to hit sometime in February or March of 2006 in North America.

Thanks to GamesAreFun, we have obtained a scan from an upcoming issue of Famitsu magazine of an advertisement for Camelot, the highly-touted Nintendo 2nd party developer. The advertisment is recruiting would-be game designers to work on a brand-new RPG the company is making for next-gen consoles, and considering Camelot's relationship with Nintendo, this naturally means the Revolution. Also considering this is an RPG, this could finally be the new Golden Sun game fans have been waiting quite a while for. Stay tuned to the Café for all the news as it breaks.

On this day 20 years ago our own wookiee brother Mike was born (we think in a Wyoming cave...). Since joining the ranks here at the GCC Mike has proven himself time and time again what an invaluable asset he has become. Feel free to drop a line in the forums to wish him a happy birthday. I can't wait until he sees that I got him a copy of Harvest Moon for his birthday...
Happy day, brother man. Keep it real, just one more year until all the legal Guinness in the world.

Resident Evil 4 Best-Selling Game of January [ IGN ]
|
According to the NPD Group, Resident Evil 4, exclusively for the Nintendo GameCube, was the hightest selling game for the month of January. Sales are reported at being around 319,000 copies, as compared to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the PS2, coming in 2nd at 241,000 compies sold. Hopefully the robust sales of RE4 should prove to other companies that there is an audience for mature games on the GameCube, and will bring more mature games to the platform in the coming months.

Midway Swims With the Big Boys - UPDATED [ Midway ]
|
Midway Games , a leading interactive entertainment software publisher and developer, today announced that it has signed a multi-territory agreement with Cartoon Network, licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, to publish video games based on five of the network's Adult Swim programs: Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Brak Show, Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law, Sealab 2021, and Space Ghost Coast to Coast. Under the terms of the agreement, Midway has the rights to develop and publish games for the console, handheld and PC platforms. The first Adult Swim product is scheduled to ship in late 2006.
Adult Swim is Cartoon Network's late-night programming block of cartoons that appeal to a grown-up sense of humor and adult sensibilities such as superhero lawyers, talking food items and cranky talk show hosts. "Cartoon Network is known for creating programming that is cutting-edge in its presentation and content, and thus perfectly suited for video games," said David F. Zucker, Midway president and chief executive officer. "The built-in fan base and popularity of Adult Swim affords us a critical stepping stone towards success."
UPDATE: It looks like Midway and Cartoon Network weren't done there. Midway has also announced that they have gained the rights to Cartoon Network franchises Ed, Edd, 'n Eddy, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, and Dexter's Laboratory. An Ed, Edd, 'n Eddy title will be released in Q3 of 2005, with games from the other franchises soon to come.

WarioWare: Touched! Puts Over 180 Games at Your Hands [ Nintendo ]
|
WarioWare: Touched! is the Nintendo DS game you've been waiting for; 9-Volt, Kat, Ana, Dr. Crygor, Jimmy, Mona and, of course, Wario are back. Wario may not always be nice, but he knows how to have a good time. WarioWare: Touched! provides hours of dual-screen fun, as players zip through more than 180 mini-games. "WarioWare: Touched! showcases the unique touch-screen abilities of Nintendo DS," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Players will spend hours mastering the highly addictive five-second games and collecting special souvenirs."
WarioWare: Touched! builds on the success of the wildly popular WarioWare series. But this version offers completely new ways to play. Most mini games will have players tapping, dragging or rubbing the touch screen, while others require them to blow into the built-in microphone. Half the fun is figuring out exactly what each mini game requires the player to do. A mini game might call for a player to use the touch screen to spin a roll of toilet paper, strike a match or chop vegetables. Others ask them to blow into the microphone to tickle someone's ear or to cool a cup of coffee. The further a player progresses, the faster and more frantic the games get. Top players will collect a variety of souvenirs, such as a playable piano, a pet chameleon and a pingpong game.

Nintendo of Japan have announced that they are teaming up with Pepsi to bring a contest to the pepsi drinkers that will give them a chance to win a light blue colored Nintendo DS. The contest will begin in mid March and only be open to Japan. This is good news though for North America and Europe to know that Nintendo definitely is going to make good on their promise that there in fact would be more colors for the DS, just like there is for GBA. Although this color DS will probably never make it to the States, the time frame for the contest suggests that North America and Europe will getting new DS colors very soon. Meet Your New Addiction: Polarium [ Nintendo ]
|
No one does puzzle games better than Nintendo. Come April 18, the latest national obsession will be Polarium, a simple yet deceptively addictive game for Nintendo DS that will have people drawing lines and seeing the world in black and white. Polarium opens the video gaming experience to all kinds of players, and will make Nintendo DS the must-have system of the spring. Polarium can be learned in seconds, but that belies its hidden complexities. Two players can compete head-to-head using the wireless mode of Nintendo DS as they race to be the first to clear the screen or thwart their opponent. Players also can design their own puzzles and send them wirelessly to a challenger.
Players race against the clock as they tap the touch screen of Nintendo DS to flip black tiles and white tiles to make patterns and puzzles disappear. They must clear the board as patterns drop faster and faster from the upper screen to the playing area on the touch screen. It’s simple, it’s catchy, it’s Polarium, only on Nintendo DS. Polarium is rated E for Everyone and will be released on April 18th.

Nintendo Releases Polarium Logo [ Nintendo ]
|
Prepare for brain-busting puzzles and fast-twitch action as you draw lines to flip black and white tiles and make patterns and puzzles disappear. Use the stylus to draw lines – as you draw lines, tiles will flip from black to white or white to black. Once a horizontal line is all one color, it will disappear. In Challenge Mode, draw lines to clear the board as patterns continuously drop from the upper screen, falling faster and faster through 10 levels of difficulty. In Puzzle mode, solve 100 single-screen puzzles by drawing a single, continuous line to clear the entire board. Click the link to view the quite plain logo. Polarium will be released on the Nintendo DS on April 18th.

Play-Yan Possibly Revealed? [ IGN ]
|
IGN got their hands on an image that is supposedly been trademarked by Nintendo recently. The name is Nintedo V-Pocket, and could possibly be the North American name for the Play-Yan, the video player for the Game Boy Advance which is also compatible with the Nintendo DS. However, seeing that it was supposedely trademarked in Japan it might be for something completely different. Furthermore, the lack of a trademark ™ symbol makes me wonder if this is even real at all. More on this when/if it breaks.
