Super Mario Strikers Kicks Some Serious Grass [ Nintendo ]
|
Perhaps more people in the United States would be soccer fans if the field were surrounded by an electrified fence, players were armed with giant attack shells and goals were scored with explosive force. Rest assured, you won't find any boring scoreless ties in the new Super Mario Strikers, which launches Dec. 5 in the United States, Canada and Latin America, exclusively for Nintendo GameCube.
This isn't your usual Mario game. Up to four players can battle in aggressive five-on-five soccer matches that would elicit red cards from the most lenient of referees. Tackling and power shots are all part of the fun. If players gets in your way, just slam them into the electric fence that marks the out-of-bounds area. But such attacks come at a price: If you strike a player who does not have the ball, you reward the opposing team with a special Power-Up item that could be used against you.
"People have described this frenetic game as soccer meets Super Smash Bros.," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Soccer remains one of the most popular sports in the world, and Super Mario Strikers gives players the tools they always wished they could unleash on their opponents."
Super Mario Strikers features classic Nintendo characters, but with some serious attitude. Players can battle against friends or work their way up through the rankings to unlock bonus features like new stadiums and hidden cheats. The game, Rated E for Everyone, will be available Dec. 5.

Over 2 million consumers across Europe have already purchased a Nintendo DS since its launch earlier this year. However, for the last three weeks, sales of the DS have skyrocketed, exceeding 100,000 units per week, and last week alone sales topped 120,000 across Europe.
Hit releases like Nintendogs are also having a massive impact on Nintendo's hand-held popularity, reaching new gamers and creating an overnight phenomenon. Since its launch on October 7th in Europe, over 1 million copies of the game have been sold. Nintendogs has become like gold dust across Europe with stocks flying off shelves as soon as they arrive in store.
Mario Kart DS has now launched and is the first Nintendo game to offer Wi-Fi gaming through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. With the combination of Mario Kart fun and simple Wi-Fi play, sales of Nintendo DS are expected to accelerate into Christmas.
The Nintendo DS is available for around £89. Mario Kart DS is available now at the estimated retail price of around £30 and the Mario Kart Pak (including a copy of Mario Kart DS and a silver Nintendo DS) is available at the estimated retail price of around £99.

Mario Kart DS Races Up The Charts [ IGN DS ]
|
IGN is reporting, via Nintendo, that in a single week Mario Kart DS has already sold a whopping 112,000 copies in the US alone. More impressive still, is that of those copies sold, over 45% of the players who purchased the game have taken it online with Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. "We are ecstatic with the results, and this definitely sets the standard for future Wi-Fi online gaming," said Nintendo's PR head Beth Lewellyn. "Mario Kart should easily be a million seller in its life cycle, and we'd love for everyone with the game to touch the Wi-Fi experience. We've got Animal Crossing just around the corner, and Metroid Prime Hunters next year, with more to come." IGN also states that in comparison, only 18% of gamers who purchased Halo 2 for the XBox last year went online through XBox Live. If you haven't gotten Mario Kart DS, what the hell are you waiting for? Pick it up today, and keep it here at the Café as Nintendo reveals more games that will support Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

The Prince of Persia makes his way home to Babylon, bearing with him Kaileena, the enigmatic Empress of Time, and unspeakable scars from the Island of Time. But instead of the peace he longs for, he finds his kingdom ravaged by war and Kaileena the target of a brutal plot. When she is kidnapped, the Prince tracks her to the Palace - only to see her murdered by a powerful enemy. Her death unleashes the Sands of Time, which strike the Prince and threaten to destroy everything he holds dear. Cast to the streets, hunted as a fugitive, the Prince soon discovers that the Sands have tainted him, too. They have given rise to a deadly Dark Prince, whose spirit gradually possesses him.

Super Smash Bros. Revolution Gets a Director [ Famitsu ]
|
While little to nothing is known about games for the Nintendo Revolution, the latest issue of Famitsu reveals a bit of insight on what is arguably the system's most anticipated title. The sequel to the GameCube's most popular title, Super Smash Bros. Melee, which was announced last E3, will be directed by none other than Masahiro Sakurai, former employee of Nintendo 2nd party developer HAL, creator of Kirby, and the current head of Q! Entertainment, the company behind such games as Meteos. Sakurai was a huge part of Melee, and was personally asked this year at E3 by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata if he'd like the chance to work with Nintendo on the upcoming Revolution sequel. While Sakurai did not reveal anything more about the game (except for the known wi-fi online play), his involvement certainly piques our enthusiasm as to how this game will turn out. Look for more information on Super Smash Bros. Revolution as it becomes available.

Nintendo Takes Game Ratings to the Next Level [ Nintendo ]
|
Nintendo of America today announces it will include a play control system in its next home video game system, code-named Revolution, coming in 2006.
By using a password-controlled setting, adults can decide what flexibility they'll allow younger players to have in playing video games rated E (Everyone), E10 (Everyone 10 and Older), T (Teen) or M (Mature). The system also ensures that dedicated adult gamers can opt to play without limitations. How does it work? The actual game software will contain a code indicating the rating, which will activate the control system to remain locked or unlocked. The feature will be included in every Revolution console worldwide.
"Even though many Nintendo games are rated E, E10 or T, we believe this kind of feature should be included in the hardware. It's the right thing to do," explains Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing. "Game ratings are on the front and back of every game package, so families can easily make a decision about whether a game is right for them."

Reggie Talks Revolution, New DS? [ CNN/Money ]
|
In an interview with CNN, Nintendo's popular vice president of sales and marketing, Reginald Fils-Aime, saw fit to clarify some details about the upcoming Revolution console, including Nintendo's plans to properly market and produce the system. First and foremost, Reggie confirmed that the Revolution will be priced significantly cheaper than the XBox 360 and Playstation 3, but the exact price point has yet to be decided. He believes that Nintendo has learned a lot of lessons since the release of the GameCube, with it's childish (to some) design and lack of high-profile software at launch. While Nintendo plans to make these changes next gen, one thing it will stand firm on is its refusal to support high-definition resolution (720p and up) in the console. Reggie claims that doing so would greatly increase load times, and also claims that the casual, average consumer, whom Nintendo is pursuing with this console, will not care about the graphics as long as the games are fun. "What we'll offer in terms of gameplay and approachability will more than make up for the lack of HD," says Reggie. Last but not least, Reggie drops a tidbit that is certainly interesting, stating that Nintendo has been looking at ways to "tweak the DS visually" since launch. Since Nintendo is no stranger to new versions of existing consoles (the GBA SP and GBM are perfect examples), could we see a redesigned DS coming soon, possibly as soon as E3? Stay tuned.

When Nintendo finally revealed the controller for their upcoming new console, codenamed Revolution, back in September, fans were skeptical of how the unique device would feel when playing games. Now, gamers will get their chance...well, kind of. Nintendo has announced that, in a special offer exclusive to Platinum and Gold members of Club Nintendo, the Japan-only membership club for Nintendo fans, they will release a universal remote control designed after the upcoming Revolution remote. While it will be only good for changing channels and not for gaming, the remote should give users a good idea of how the Revolution controller will feel when the console is released next year. Nintendo has not announced if the controller replica will be released in the US as well, but we'll keep an eye on that.

Updated Info and Screens for True Swing Golf (NDS) [ Nintendo ]
|
Players pick one of eight characters (four male and four female), select a personality and hit the tour. From there they can play in tournaments, practice, play a quick round or play in local wireless mode with pals.
* Touch Swing control: In this realistic golf game, swing control mimics real life. Players simply slide the stylus across the touch screen to strike the ball and send it flying. They can even curve their swing to slice or hook shots and alter the angle of the club head for sharpshooter-like accuracy. * More than 15 impressive 3-D courses, all with their own hazards and strategies, test players' skills. Players earn better gear by winning tournaments to help them compete. * With several game modes, character customization and wireless multiplayer support for up to four players with just one game card, there's something here for all golfers, no matter what their skill levels.
Characters: Four males and four females. Each can have a “cool” or “wild” personality.
How to progress through the game: Play tournaments to go up in the rankings, which earns more money to buy better gear. As players customize their characters' clubs, spikes and other gear, their game will improve and they will unlock more and more courses.
Special powers/weapons/moves/features: The intuitive control of the game is the true special move, as it quickly immerses veteran golfers and novices alike. Players simply touch the screen to switch clubs, aim their shot, view camera angles or make menu selections. Once they're ready to swing, they just touch the club head, draw it back and swing it forward to make contact.
Adjusting the angle of the club face allows players to hook or slice the ball, and a precise swing will always pay off in the end.
For multiplayer games, players can play with up to four people over local wireless with a single game card using DS Download Play (or with multiple ones for more options in DS Local Area Network). Players also can download a demo to other Nintendo DS systems.
True Swing Golf, formerly Touch Golf, hits the links on January 23.

Updated Info for Super Princess Peach (NDS) [ Nintendo ]
|
After Bowser gets hold of something called a magical Vibe Wand, he kidnaps Mario and Luigi and heads back to his castle on Vibe Island with an emotional troop of minions in tow. Intent on rescuing the Mario Bros., Peach gives chase, only to find herself affected by the emotional vibes given off by the island. Using these newfound vibes to channel special abilities, she sets off to rescue Mario and Luigi. (Note that area and item names are not final)
* Bowser's finally gotten wise and kidnapped Mario, figuring that since he's the guy who normally does the rescuing, no one will be around to rescue him. He's in for a big surprise, though, because Peach is armed (with a parasol) and dangerous. * Besides whacking Bowser's minions with her parasol, Peach can channel emotional vibes into special abilities: floating through the air when she's happy, burning through bridges when she's mad or making vegetation grow with her tears. * Join the princess as she runs, jumps, floats and fights her way through eight worlds to where Mario's being held.
Characters: Peach, her magical parasol, Parry, Bowser. Mario and Luigi have minor roles, as they've been kidnapped.
How to progress through the game: Players play through eight areas, each composed of several stages and a boss, as they search out imprisoned Toads and collect coins. While running and jumping through stages, players must use Peach's vibes to break through impediments, conquer impossibly high cliffs and defeat enemies. To build up Peach's vibe powers, players collect gems or pick up enemies with her magic parasol and absorb them.
Special powers/weapons/moves/features: Peach can run, jump and slide, not to mention use her parasol to whack things, pick items up and even float across water. Besides that, she has four vibes that give her special abilities.
-Joy: Peach whirls about like a cyclone, creating air currents that will spin windmills, clear away enemies or even lift her high into the air. -Rage: Peach catches fire, burning enemies and wood impediments. -Gloom: Peach weeps and runs incredibly fast, during which time she's invincible. Her tears can cause plants to grow, among other things. -Calm: Peach becomes invincible and slowly regains health. (Note that vibe names are not final)
Super Princess Peach comes to North America on February 27.

Updated Info for Odama (GCN) [ Nintendo ]
|
A main character in Odama is Yamanouchi Kagetora, a young general struggling to avenge his clan and preserve the Way of Ninten, a philosophy that puts the greater good above the individual's needs. With this philosophy to guide him, he finds that his individual soldiers can band together to create a force strong enough to defeat even the most powerful enemy, here a general named Genshin who killed his father. Kagetora exacts his revenge, using only limited resources against a vast army. One of these resources is a sacred object protected by his clan: a legendary weapon called the Odama.
* Using giant flippers, players aim the giant Odama ball to bowl over enemies, shatter their defenses and wreak havoc on the battlefield. * With the Nintendo GameCube Mic, players command men to charge the enemy, defend positions, seize the enemy gates and much more.
How to progress through the game: The L and R buttons control the flippers, which operate exactly like those in any pinball game: they smack the Odama back into the battlefield, directing it into targets and away from soldiers. Players also can tilt the battlefield, allowing them to alter the course of the Odama once they've hit it into the fray. Using the Nintendo GameCube Mic, players will direct soldiers by giving voice commands to them. The goal is to shatter the enemy gates with the Odama and direct a crew of men carrying a giant bell to pass through the opened gates. Players' soldiers will defend their crew and seize enemy positions to protect their men on the mission.
Special powers/weapons/moves/features: The Nintendo GameCube Mic is the most important addition to this title. By holding down the X button on the controller, players activate the microphone. There is a vast array of commands that Odama can understand, allowing players to order their soldiers to charge through the enemy ranks, retreat, line up in formation or carry items, just to name a few.
Odama is slated for a March 6 release.

Updated Info and Screens for Final Fantasy IV (GBA) [ Nintendo ]
|
The king of Baron has directed his loyal Red Wings armada to steal the sacred crystals from the neighboring nations. When the king commands his dark knight, Cecil, to destroy the village of Mist for its crystal, Cecil abandons the king and vows to put an end to his madness. Taking his friends and Rydia, the sole survivor of Mist’s destruction, Cecil embarks on a quest to set the world right and to make amends for the atrocities he committed in the king’s name.
* Players test their skills in a new, 50-level dungeon, or strengthen their characters in the training dungeon. * Study foes with the Bestiary, or listen to the legendary score using the soundtrack player. * Experience never-before-seen story sequences as party members are switched.
How to progress through the game: Players wander freely on the “world map,” getting into random monster battles and fighting their way from location to location, discovering more of the story as they go. Players enter their attack commands, and when their opportunity to attack comes, their characters perform the attacks, which range from sword strikes to magical blows. Players can swap out the characters in their parties, so that they can use black or white mages, lance-wielding dragoons, knights and paladins and thieves, to name a few. Each character has a unique set of attacks and abilities.

It's been delayed, thought to be cancelled, and rumored to be released for every Nintendo console since the SNES. Now, it's finally official - Mother 3 (the sequel to the game known in the US as Earthbound) is officially in development. Shigetsao Itoi confirmed in his blog at Nintendo's official site that the game is not only being worked on, but is very close to complete, with a release confirmed for early next year on the Game Boy Advance. It remains to be seen if Nintendo will localize the title to the US, but with the thinning GBA release lineup it's very likely. Imagine your closest friends embarking on a cruise ship to some of the most awe-inspiring destinations around the world and the great times they surely have in store for themselves. Now, imagine you get left behind. As the story goes, Toadsworth invited Mario and all his pals to take a luxury voyage aboard the MSS Sea Star. Bowser finds himself absent from the guest list and begins conniving to ruin their excursion. After all – if he can't have fun, no one should have fun. With the Nov. 7 launch of Mario Party 7 for Nintendo GameCube, see what trouble he stirs up.
The Mario Party series has sold more than 5 million copies in the United States, putting it in the ranks of the most popular video game franchises of all time. Playing like a virtual board game, it has also been highly popular among college students. And now, for the first time ever, with Mario Party 7, it can bring an entire family together with its eight-player action. The game promises to be a great value with a special offer for the holidays. A bundle will be available for a limited time that includes a Nintendo GameCube, two controllers and Mario Party 7, all at an MSRP of just $99.99.
Two new characters, Birdo and Dry Bones, join the party, while the video game features 86 new mini-games, 11 of which use the included Nintendo GameCube Mic that allows players to control the action with their voices. It's like 86 games merged into one, with playable characters that include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Daisy, Wario, Waluigi, Boo, Toad and Toadette. Players explore the world with six new game boards that serve as exotic ports of call, including Pyramid Park, Pagoda Peak, Grand Canal, Windmillville, Neon Heights and Bowser World. Bowser has made a mess of traditionally lovely vacation spots, as he has other plans for his friendly sightseers while he turns the vacationing paradise into a tension-filled madhouse.

This time around you play as the original Bond, Sean Connery himself. Connery allowed his likeness to be used so you will really have that oldschool Bond movie feel when you play this game. Hit the links below to check out the new media. We also have an E3 trailer with extended gameplay in our E3 Media section.

The title will be released exclusively for the GameCube and will hit stores in March of 2006.

First Image of 20th Anniversary Game Boy Micro [ Nintendo ]
|
Nintendo has released the first image of their upcoming limited-edition Game Boy Micro released in honor of the 20th anniversary of the NES release. However, there is a little surprise Nintendo had to offer, in that the system isn't styled after the classic NES console, as originally thought, but will be styled instead after Japan's Famicom console, their version of the NES. One has to wonder Nintendo's logic in creating a nostalgia-based system for a console that was never released in the US, but I digress. Check out the first image of the 20th Anniversary Edition Game Boy Micro below.

New Nintendo Release Dates Announced [ Nintendo ]
|
At today's Nintendo of America press summit held in Redmond, Washington, Nintendo announced the first taste of what Nintendo will offer up for the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and GameCube in 2006, with firm release dates for games for all three consoles, including confirmations of releases for titles previously not set for the United States.
For the GameCube, two titles that were heavily shown off by the company this year at E3 are now coming to the system in 2006. On February 6th, the unique adventure title Chibi Robo will hit stores. This will be followed on March 6th by Yoot Saito's Odama, the military pinball simulation making use of the GameCube microphone.
Nintendo is also making sure that owners of the Game Boy Advance as well as the new Game Boy Micro aren't left out either. The company has confirmed that Drill Dozer will hit stores on February 6th, as well as confirming that Nintendo will publish Namco's GBA RPG Tales of Phantasia in the US for release on March 6th. Nintendo also announced that recent release of the Famicom Game Boy Micro in Japan will be ported to the US as well - that is, as a brand-new limited edition NES-styled GBM, which will hit stores on November 20th. No images of the new GBM were released.
Last but not least, the Nintendo DS looks to be keeping its strong holiday momentum going into next year with a crop of quality titles. Along with Electroplankton, which will be released only at online retailers and at New York City's Nintendo World Store on January 9th, the new golf title Touch Golf will be released on January 23rd with a new title: True Swing Golf. Also, the new side-scrolling adventure Super Princess Peach, starring Mario's all-too-often kidnapped significant other, will be released in the US on February 27th. Finally, the long-awaited Metroid Prime Hunters, the first-person shooter set in the Metroid universe with a new single-player adventure and Wi-Fi online play, will be released on March 20th. Plus, the company announced that the extremely popular Brain Training games, which have becoming near million-sellers in Japan, will be localized for the US as well, under the names "Brain Training" and "Brain Flex". No release dates were announced for those titles.
Stay with us at the Café as Nintendo reveals more on these and all their upcoming titles set to hit stores in the coming months.

2KGames Cracks The Da Vinci Code [ 2KGames ]
|
2KGames, the publishing arm of Take-Two Interactive, has announced that it is currently working on a game for current-gen consoles based upon the upcoming film by Sony Pictures, The Da Vinci Code. The film is based upon the book by Dan Brown, which has sold 38.6 Million copies and stands as the best-selling fiction book of all time. While specific consoles were not announced for the game's release, considering this game is based upon such a massive film release, a GameCube release is a good possibility. The Da Vinci Code game will be developed by The Collective, the developer behind such games as Star Wars: Episode III, and it will hit stores around the time of the film, in May 2006.

StarCraft: Ghost Gone from GameCube [ Blizzard ]
|
Sad news tonight for GameCube owners, as Blizzard has announced that the long (and I mean LONG) awaited third-person shooter in the StarCraft universe, StarCraft: Ghost, has had its GameCube version cancelled. Blizzard stated that the official reason for the GameCube version's cancellation was simple: the console isn't selling well, and the GameCube has no online support. On a positive note, Blizzard has stated that they are still open to working on projects for Nintendo consoles, both for GameCube and Revolution. With rumors of Blizzard porting some of it's legendary PC titles such as Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo to the PC-port friendly Nintendo DS, it looks like this possibility may come true.

Twentieth Century Fox Television and Gracie Films today announced a long-term deal that grants EA development rights to multiple videogame titles based on the FOX hit series The Simpsons. Working closely with the television studio's Licensing and Merchandising division, Gracie Films and The Simpsons writers, EA will create original Simpsons game content for next generation videogame systems. This groundbreaking deal between Fox and EA is the first development deal between these two entities. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The first game of the multi-game deal will be launched on next generation systems; no launch date has been announced. "This is a great opportunity for our talented development team to collaborate with the brilliant minds of THE SIMPSONS to bring original Simpsons material to videogame fans," said Nick Earl, Vice President and General Manager, EA Redwood Shores Studio. "This is something EA's been interested in for years and now game development and technology is at a place where The Simpsons characters and world will really come alive in these games."
"Simpsons" Executive Producer James L. Brooks, speaking on behalf of Gracie Films, stated, "I think this is a great opportunity for us, primarily because it brings with it the possibility of free EA games."
Game development will be done at EA's Redwood Shores Studio, the team behind such titles as Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Sims 2, and 007: From Russia With Love.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the godfather of videogames, recently conducted an interview with BusinessWeek. Here are a few of the more interesting quotes from Mario's daddy:
(On the biggest innovation for gaming since the 1980s): "The biggest change was when 3D graphics came to Nintendo 64 and PlayStation. Before that, arcades had the edge in game technology. In the pecking order, game consoles for homes came last. 3D changed that and made home consoles the front-runner."
(On the secret of making a hit game): "Whether it's a new game or a sequel, we want anyone to be able to play right away. That's why I think Rubik's Cube was so brilliant. I saw it for the first time at a toy convention in Japan in the early 1980s. The moment you see a Rubik's Cube, you know you're supposed to twist the pieces. And it's beautifully designed. Even if you've never handled one, you want to pick it up and try it. And once you do that, it's hard to walk away until you've solved it."
(On Nintendo's "kiddie" image): "We disagree with people who say, 'Nintendo is for kids, and Sony is for adults.' There are plenty of 60-year-olds who will play the games we make. Women in their 20s haven't been a major target for game makers. But many young women have found our games fun, especially Nintendogs."
(On Revolution): "I want families to play video games together. That was the concept behind the Revolution. I also redesigned the Revolution's controller to look more like a regular TV remote, so anyone who saw it would know instantly how to use it, and so they wouldn't think they had to always stash it away."
(On the future of gaming): "It's convenient to make games that are played on TVs. But I always wanted to have a custom-sized screen that wasn't the typical four-cornered cathode-ray-tube TV. I've always thought that games would eventually break free of the confines of a TV screen to fill an entire room. But I would rather not say anything more about that."
There's a lot more to the interview. If you want to read the whole thing just click the source link above. Certainly some interesting stuff here. Draw your own conclusions about the future console thing he talked about, I'm not brave enough to even touch that one.

In an interview with Spanish gaming site Meristation, Nintendo of Europe director of marketing Jim Merrick revealed a bit more on the upcoming Nintendo Revolution console, as well as the recent rumors surrounding its graphical capabilities. Merrick reiterated the words of Nintendo president Satoru Iwata by stating once again that he does not believe Revolution will be graphically inferior to XBox 360 or Playstation 3, even though the specs might be slightly lower. He also stated that there will be no Revolution games shown before year's end, since Miyamoto and the Nintendo development teams do not like to show off games without the controller. Until games can be shown in playable form, they will not be shown at all.
Merrick did reveal one major piece of infor about the Revolution, however, confirming that it would not only be able to connect wirelessly to a wifi network via Nintendo WiFi Connection, but also will wirelessly connect to other Revolution systems via a wireless LAN. Also, in a very cool piece of info, he states that the Revolution will be capable of download play, similar to the Nintendo DS, where only one copy of the game is needed for multiplayer play. Still, the announcement of Revolution games not being shown until they are ready to play is troubling, especially with the XBox 360 launching later this month and the Playstation 3 rumored to have playable games as early as January's Consumer Electronic Show, with a possible launch in March. Still, it's safe to assume Nintendo WILL have playable demos of Revolution at E3 2006, now 7 months away, and once again GameCube Café will be there to provide the best coverage, the best reporting, the best impressions, and yet another excellent DVD. Stay Tuned!
