Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls Ships [ Nintendo ]

Nintendo resurrects the original installments of the multimillion-dollar Square Enix franchise that set the standard for role-playing excitement and adds bonus content to make the adventures new and fresh for even the most experienced players. Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls, for Game Boy Advance, lets players revisit familiar sagas before throwing new challenges at them. Both games are contained on one game pak.

The FFI adventure follows four young adventurers as they use swords and sorcery to help restore order to their chaotic world. Players will discover a series of four bonus dungeons not found in the original game. Inside, players will encounter and battle an array of monsters from FF games III through VI before fighting the final boss; to keep things interesting, the layout of the dungeons changes every time.

In FFII, a band of orphans leads a resistance force to free the world from the clutches of an evil empire. After four characters die in the main game, a bonus storyline follows them into the afterlife as they fight to defeat the emperor of Pandaemonium.

Final Fantasy I & II is rated E for Everyone and will retail for $29.99.

Nintendo Enters the World of Anime [ IGN Cube ]

A while back, we reported that Nintendo's former president, Hiroshi Yamauchi, was preparing to announce plans for Nintendo to enter the movie business. Now, IGN Cube is reporting that, in fact, Nintendo is beginning work on various animated projects, all of which will be worked upon and financed internally. While it's unknown if we'll be seeing a Mario, Zelda, or Metroid anime anytime soon, Nintendo did say they expect to reveal their work around 2006. Also, Nintendo announced plans to allow Japanese moviegoers to use their DS systems to download content via the system's wireless technology, starting with the new Pokémon film to be released in the summer of 2005.

Kirby Goes Multiplayer [ IGN Cube ]

Earlier this week, we revealed the first screenshots of a brand-new Kirby adventure for the GameCube. However, we never recieved any details on the game - not even a name. However, thanks to IGN Cube, we can now confirm that the game will have multiplayer support for up to four players. What this means is unknown, but, if you have some friends and enjoy small pink puffballs with severe inhalation tendencies, have we got a game for you!

Nintendo Becomes Principal Owner of the Seattle Mariners [ Japan Today ]

Former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi reportedly sold his ownership shares of the Seattle Mariners baseball team today back to Nintendo, therefore pushing Nintendo's ownership percentage of the team up to 50%, making the company principal owner of the team. Now, if only they could get Ichiro to do commercials for Mario Baseball...(hint, hint.)

Nintendo's Profits Increase [ Nintendo of Japan ]

After last year's unfortunate 2.6 million yen loss (which had fanboys thinking the sky was falling, even though it was only due to bad exchange rates), Nintendo seems to have turned it around in 2004, so far. Nintendo's profits were up 46.4 billion yen (that's $451 million US) for the fiscal period ending September 30th, which definately shows an upward trend for the company, even though sales were admittedly down. Nintendo doesn't plan to stop there, however - it was also announced that they project that their profits at the end of the year will increase to 90 billion yen (that's $875 million US), as even though hardware sales are down, software sales are more than making up the difference, not to mention sales of the DS are expected to make a huge impact on the company's sales. Yeah, Nintendo's really in trouble, isn't it?

Miyamoto Reveals More Info About Upcoming Nintendo Titles [ Famitsu ]

To follow up Nintendo of Japan's releasing of several screenshots of new games this week, Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu held an inteview with the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto, who dropped some details that are quite interesting.

First, on the topic of Nintendo going online, Miyamoto states that since online gaming will be the mainstream way to play in the next 3-4 years, Nintendo will try to move in that direction (finally). The origins of this will begin with the Nintendo DS, which will be online "sooner than we all think". It was also stated that Nintendo is working on this project with Square-Enix, arguably Japan's most prolific game developer.

Next, in regards to the GameCube, Miyamoto stated that the newly announced Mario Baseball is a joint production of Nintendo and Namco. Also, Nintendo is in fact working on a brand new Mario adventure title (the long-rumored Super Mario 128) and shockingly enough, it will come to the GameCube, not the upcoming Revolution. Nintendo is also beginning work on a brand new Pokémon title for the GameCube as well, in development with "strong allies". All of this information looks very enticing, and hopefully more info will be released in the coming weeks.

Nintendo Employees Donate Food to Northwest Harvest [ Nintendo ]

Nintendo of America employees opened their cupboards, wallets and hearts to donate 4 tons of food to Northwest Harvest on Tuesday. The massive donation ensures that those who need food the most will have it on their tables for Thanksgiving. With video game icon Mario on hand, the 4 tons of food were loaded into a Northwest Harvest truck to be delivered to some of the 300 food banks the statewide organization supplies.

"Northwest Harvest tells us that food donations in the area are down 38 percent from last year, so our employees even went so far as to hold competitions to see which division could collect the most food," said Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo of America's vice president of marketing & corporate affairs. "During the past few weeks, it's become commonplace to see employees arrive at work with trunks loaded with pounds of pasta, huge sacks of pancake mix and so many cans of vegetables they can't carry them all."

Sony Predicts High for PSP [ Sony ]

Sony is predicting high sales numbers for the PSP, which will most likely launch in March next year. Case manufacturer Mitac Precision Technology has stated in a financial briefing that Sony plans to sell 10 million PSP units during its first year on the market. That seems high but the real question is: does 10 million make it competitive with the Nintendo DS? Nintendo launched the DS in North America with 2 million units and that first shipment is going to be extinguished by this week's end. Japan will also be launching with 2 million units and those as well are going to be all sold by the end of the first week. In the first week of sales for North America and Japan Nintendo will have sold 4 million copies of the DS. One can only estimate what sales after a year will be for the DS. My guess will be that they push around 15 to 20 million units by next Holiday season. So while Sony's predictions are high, it looks like they still won't be able to beat Nintendo in the handheld wars.

Steven Kent Reviews the DS [ USA Today ]

Steven Kent, just about the most recognized videogame journlist, has wrote his review on the Nintendo DS. You can view it at USA Today by clicking the source link above. Below is a little blurb from the review. You like that, you might want to check out the rest.

"Technologically, DS stands out as a huge improvement. Its graphics may not be high art, but they look far better than anything on Game Boy, Nokia's N-Gage or other current systems. With 256-by-192-pixel resolution screens and a processor that is roughly as powerful as the one in the Nintendo 64 console, DS is a vast advance over Game Boy Advance."

ESRB Considered "Highly Accurate" [ ESRB ]

A study released today found that the vast majority of American parents agree with the ratings assigned to computer and video games by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). The study, conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates, found that parents agree with ESRB ratings 83% of the time.

"The study released today asked parents if they agree with ESRB ratings after seeing the actual games themselves, and the results are simple and clear. As Peter D. Hart Research concluded, 'Parents find computer and video game ratings to be highly accurate,'" said Patricia E. Vance, president of the ESRB. "The results are especially noteworthy and credible because unlike academic studies that rely on the personal opinions of the researchers, this one gets to the heart of the matter by gathering information directly from those people for whom ratings matter the most -- parents."

The study showed 401 randomly selected parents a compilation of video footage from 80 popular computer and video games rated within the prior twelve months. Respondents were asked to assign the ESRB rating they felt was most appropriate and then were told what rating the ESRB actually assigned the game. Parents were asked to describe the ESRB rating as "about right," "too strict," or "too lenient." Interviews were conducted at shopping malls in ten different regions of the United States, in order to ensure geographic diversity reflected in the results.

Parents said that the ratings were "about right" 83% of the time, and furthermore 5% of the time, parents thought ESRB had been "too strict." What makes this study unique is its scope across major rating categories and its inclusion of consumer feedback, focusing on parents who depend on the ratings to help them determine which games are appropriate for their families.

And Where is Metroid Prime 2 Day, G4? [ Nintendo ]

Listen up video game fans! The Nintendo DS is about to hit shelves, and to celebrate the release of this new hand-held video game system, G4techTV is partnering with Nintendo to offer viewers the complete Nintendo DS dual screen experience for one day only. Making a move that has never been done before, G4techTV, the network all about video games, will transform its broadcast signal into "TV Dual Screen Mode" for 20 consecutive hours, replicating the Nintendo DS system on "Nintendo DS Day" this Sunday, November 21.

"Nintendo DS Day" will feature G4techTV programming on the top screen of the look-alike system, while DS gameplay footage airs simultaneously in the bottom screen, replicating the two-screen experience of playing the Nintendo DS. "Cinematech," the show that gives viewers an inside look at game trailers, mini-movies and real-time gameplay, will premiere a special episode utilizing both screens to offer the true Nintendo DS experience.

Launching on Nov. 21 nationwide, the Nintendo DS is a ground-breaking new platform that boasts dual screens, touch-screen and voice-recognition interfaces and wireless capabilities. The 1 million Nintendo DS units available in North America are expected to be depleted by year's end. The G4techTV promotion was created through a partnership with both Nintendo and Starcom, and is part of Nintendo's aggressive, multifaceted marketing program to launch the innovative new system.

"Nintendo DS Day" is another example of how G4techTV is continuing to reinvent the holidays for video game fans. The network recently celebrated "GTA TV" and "Halo 2 Day," in honor of the releases of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Halo 2, with full days of themed programming. These video game holidays honor the biggest days for gamers throughout the year.

Also, the DS games that have already gone on sale like Feel The Magic:XX/XY, Spiderman 2, Madden NFL 2005, Asphalt Urban GT, and The Urbz: Sims in the City have been selling out at retailers nationwide - before the system is even released. Nintendo looks to be in total control right now, as the DS looks primed to be one of the biggest items in holiday season history.

New Spider-Man DS Trailer [ GameCube Café ]

Activision's Spider-Man 2 DS for Nintendo DS follows the storyline of the summer smash hit Spider-Man 2 over the course of over a dozen missions. In addition to running into the movie's main meanie Doctor Octopus, classic Spider-Man villains such as Mysterio also make an appearance (although in Mysterio's case you never can be sure if he's really making an appearance or it's one of his many illusions!).

Spider-Man 2's graphics are an impressive mix of 2D and 3D. As Spider-Man swings and springs through the city, the levels rotate as they scroll, which really adds a great feeling of depth to the action. Some encounters switch the viewpoint to first person, such as the epic battle with Doc Ock on top of the runaway train. Right click and save the trailer to your hard drive.

DS Puts New Experiences Only a Touch Away [ Nintendo ]

If you've ever enjoyed video games, you've likely played Mario, Madden or Metroid, The Sims or Spider-Man - but you've never played them like this. The names and characters might be familiar, but now you can interact with them in completely new ways. On Nov. 21, just in time for the holidays, gamers across North America will begin snapping up the most innovative game platform in a decade, the Nintendo DS. Boasting dual screens, touch-screen and voice-recognition interfaces and two forms of wireless connection, the 1 million Nintendo DS units available in North America already are expected to be depleted by year's end.

"Retailers began calling for more Nintendo DS units even before the first ones arrived," explains Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing. "They're reflecting the demands of game players for entirely new ways to enjoy games - not just playing the same old games on a different platform. It really comes down to delivering a new experience and that's what we're doing."

By the end of March, the Nintendo DS game library will include 20 to 25 games. More than 125 games remain in development worldwide, from Nintendo as well as every major third-party developer. And because Nintendo DS is backward compatible with Game Boy Advance SP games, it already has a library of more than 550 games. "Interest in Nintendo DS is very high as we head into the holidays," says Jeff Griffiths, CEO and president of Electronics Boutique. "This is a must-have item for a wide variety of people, older and younger, this holiday season."

Nintendo to release TV Adapter for DS [ Gamefront ]

Much like they did for the GBA, Nintendo is releasing an adapter for the DS that will allow users to watch TV on the system via an antenna providing free air channels. The tuner will be compatable with both the DS and GBA/GBA SP (since it plugs into either system's GBA game port) and uses 3 AA batteries to power it for around 6 hours of TV viewing. The adapter will go on sale in Spring 2005 for a price of 9,240 yen (about $89), and will doubtfully see our shores since the GBA's TV adapter never did, except through import sales. Even so, you can take a look at an image of this unique device from the latest Nintendo Dream magazine below.

They unite behind the charismatic General Jung, who announces that the "traitors and capitalists" have no right to barter away "the birthright of the North Korean people." Jung’s forces quickly wipe out other splinter factions of the military and mobilize North Korea’s vast army of reserves. Before long, Jung is the supreme authority in North Korea. Nintendo considering an Nintendo64 Player? [ Nintendo ]

Take this for what you will, but Nintendo currently has a poll on their main page which asks users how much they would like to pay for an adapter that would allow you to play N64 games on your GameCube. The possible prices range from $39-$59, and although it is unknown if this is something Nintendo is actually planning, it is worth a mention.

Warrior Within Time Powers [ Ubisoft ]

Thanks to the talisman Farah gave him at the end of the Sands of Time, the Prince still has the ability to control time. To use his time powers, the Prince needs to have sand in the medallion. He can refill sand slots by passing close to the dead bodies of enemies. Each sand cloud will fill one sand slot.

Time Travel
In special places called "warp rooms," the Prince can use his powers to travel through the Timeline to a distant past or come back to the present. Laws of cause and effect can help him to progress in the present by altering the past.

Recall
By using this power, the Prince can rewind time to cancel any mistake or to avoid any attack. Once he has rewound, he can redo the actions he missed. The power timer displays how much time the Prince can rewind.

Eye of the Storm
The Prince is able to slow down time as he continues to move at the same speed. This allows him to defy speed-limited traps and to fight his enemies while they are slow and helpless. Tap the L1 button to use the Eye of the Storm attack during a fight.

Breath of Fate
This power lets the Prince do a strong ground attack that hurts several enemies simultaneously.

Wind of Fate
This power lets the Prince do an even stronger ground attack that hurts several enemies simultaneously.

Cyclone of Fate
This power lets the Prince do the strongest ground attack, hurting several enemies simultaneously.

Ravages of Time
The Prince can do a light-speed attack that instantly kills most enemies.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within ships on November 30 across North America.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Launches Across US [ Nintendo ]

You might be comfortable in the armor. You might wield the arm cannon with devastating precision. And you might even be a master at maneuvering the Morph Ball. Yet nothing you've encountered has prepared you for the edge-of-your-seat adventure of Metroid Prime 2 Echoes, launching today exclusively for Nintendo GameCube.

"Not only is this the most graphically beautiful and intellectually challenging Metroid adventure ever," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications, "but the game also, for the first time, lets up to four players compete to determine the best bounty hunter of all."

The deep, single-player storyline begins as Samus finds herself trapped on a mysterious planet, populated by creatures of both light and darkness. She must bolster her suit's power to battle enemies and solve puzzles, all while a hostile entity stalks her. Players explore the environment using new scanning equipment and new weapons that yield different results, depending on the type of enemy. Players use the new Light Beam and Dark Beam, as well as staples of the Metroid arsenal like the Morph Ball, Grapple Beam and Missile Launcher.

In the game's multiplayer mode, up to four players don metal suits to try to blast their opponents into oblivion. Jump and shoot to find special power-ups or roll away from a punishing attack. Metroid Prime 2 Echoes is rated T for Teen and will sell for an MSRP of $49.99.

DS Ruling in Japan [ Nikkei ]

Japanese business newspaper Nikkei is reporting that the Nintendo DS's preorder sales have passed 2 Million, which is far higher than Nintendo's initial shipping number. In order to provide for these sky high numbers, Nintendo will outsouce production to 3 plants in China, to provide for all orders by the end of the year. It should also be noted that Nintendo's previous handheld, the Game Boy Advance SP, only amassed 1.5 million preorders before it was released. It's looking very much like the DS will be a dominant force of holiday sales for Nintendo all over the world.

Mystery Behind RE4 PS2 Port Revealed [ Resident Evil Horror ]

The following is a quote from Syobo Online from a person who is close with Capcom Japan.

"First off, the breaking of exclusivity in this case was not because of user demand, but a plan to boost the stock price, as some already understood, but it seems like there has been confrontation between the developers and the management who are following shareholders' instructions. Capcom nowadays is different to when Okamoto worked there, the development team's voice seems weaker than before. It also looks like a lot of skilled staff will leave the company after the GC version of 4 is finished. But the people behind this rebellion are the developers, and they ask that you don't blame Mikami or Kobayashi. The GC version of 4 is the last one that Mikami will be involved in, the PS2 version will be passed on to someone else. People who used to work at Capcom are also shocked by this news."

As I am sure you are aware of Shinji Mikami announced back in April that he would be leaving Production Studio 4 to go work with another in house development team at Capcom. Hideki Kamiya, who runs Production Studio 7 is also leaving to go work at Clover Studios leaving the RE franchise after RE4 without any experienced directors. Hiroyuki
Kobayashi has also stated that RE4 will be end of the current storyline that revolves around the T-Virus. Basically the main storyline for Resident Evil will mark its end with the end of RE4. However the franchise still continues to make a lot of money. With fresh blood in the directors and creative chairs the RE series after 4 will likely be taken in a direction no one can imagine.

DK Takes Beating in December [ Nintendo of Japan ]

Nintendo of Japan has announced today that Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat will be released in time for the holiday season in Japan. The game will release on December 16th. This looks good for North America as the game releasing before the year's end over there surely means an early release for it here. You can check out our video of Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat from E3. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past seven or so month DK: Jungle Beat will use the Donkey Konga bongos as the controller. Nintendo never fails to keep it "fresh."

Viewtiful Joe 2 Gets Moved Up [ Capcom ]

Capcom has announced, somewhat surprisingly, that Viewtiful Joe 2, the sequel to last year's highly-acclaimed GameCube action title, will be released earlier than previously announced. Originally scheduled for the 23rd of this month, Viewtiful Joe 2 will now hit stores next week, on November 18th. The reasoning for this is that Capcom wants to get the game out before the Thanksgiving holiday, although it could be inferred that Nintendo wanted Capcom to release the game earlier to put the attention squarely on the DS launch, which occurs the week of Viewtiful Joe 2's previous release date.

Presidential Long-Shot Refuses to Concede [ Nintendo ]

You may remember several months back that game icon and Nintendo mascot Mario had declared his candidacy for the presidency of the United States. Despite not appearing on many ballots across the country and not winning a single electoral vote, he refuses to concede. This is the official statement from the Mario Party:

Despite recent events in Ohio, video game icon and presidential candidate Mario is refusing to concede victory. The leader of the Mario Party vowed to continue his campaign through Dec. 6, when his new game, Mario Party 6, launches.

Mario launched his campaign a year ago, and early exit polls indicate he did especially well among princesses, apes and residents of the Mushroom Kingdom.

"After a long political season, people need a party that offers something really unique," explains Mario. "Mario Party 6 meets the global test for fun."

Mario Party 6, made exclusively for Nintendo GameCube, plays like a board game on a television. The boards change as the clock shifts from day to night. The game also includes more than 80 new mini-games, sure to delight players from all corners of the political spectrum.

Mario Party 6, Rated E for Everyone, will sell at an MSRP of $49.99.

Somebody really needs to tell Mario (and Arnold, for that matter) that foreign born people can't become president.

RE4 Even Less Exclusive [ Spong ]

Many Nintendo fans speculated that the PS2 may eventually get Resident Evil 4 even though it was supposed to be GCN exclusive. Well, the PS2 did. But it gets worse. Hot on the heels of the PS2 announcement, Capcom has now revealed that an Xbox version of RE4 will now be released along with the PS2 version (which will be about a year after the GCN release). Good news to Xbox fans at least. We still get it a year before them, so it's still good.
