THQ Reveals New Nickelodeon Games For 2005 [ THQ ]
|
THQ has announced that they will release several games based on Nickelodeon properties during 2005, and nearly all of these games will be coming to the Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS. First off, Nickelodeon's most popular character, Spongebob Squarepants, will be returning in an all-new game for all three Nintendo systems this fall, where players will compete in 30 party-style games in an attempt to win a role in an episode of the show. Also, Tak the shaman will return once again in Tak 3 for all three systems, and will hit stores in the fall as well. Also for all three systems in the fall is Nicktoons, a multiplayer platform game starring all of Nickelodeon's original characters. Also in 2005 will be Barnyard for the GCN and GBA, based on Nickelodeon's upcoming animated feature film of the same name, as well as GBA games based on popular Nickelodeon franchises The Fairly Oddparents, Danny Phantom, and everGirl. Look for more information on these games as it becomes available.

Take-Two announced today that their previous exclusivity deal with the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) has now been expanded to include the official Major League Baseball Properties, and Major Leage Baseball Advanced Media, which now gives Take-Two the exclusive third-party rights to Major League Baseball in full, and effectively puts an end to EA's MVP Baseball series starting in 2006, much like EA ended Take-Two's football series via their deals with the NFL, AFL, and ESPN. Also, in what might be a dig at EA and Nintendo signing two stars from the 2004 World Series champion Boston Red Sox (Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz, respectively) for their 2005 baseball titles, Take-Two has signed superstar shortstop Derek Jeter from the archrival New York Yankees as the long-term coverboy for Take-Two's MLB line. Take-Two has also stated that the MLB 2K franchise will not be the only MLB titles produced by Take-Two and their new publishing company, 2K Games, and they are planning a variety of titles using the license.

Last week an interesting article was found on the internet which supposedly leaks information regarding the upcoming Nintendo Revolution. Now this is all strictly just rumors right now, nothing has been confirmed. The only reason we are reporting on this is because the information within the article seems along the lines of innovation that Nintendo wants to take. I can't really explain anything to you, the best thing to do is hit the source link and read it for yourself. This is the guy who leaked Nintendo DS information early last year that turned out to be accurate. The image below is a sketch by the author of the article of what the Revolution would look like. He isn't Leonardo Da Vinci, remember that when looking at the sketch.

Meteos is designed by Kirby creator Masahiro Sakurai and produced by Space Channel 5 designer Mizuguchi and is a puzzle game in which blocks (called meteors) descend from the top of the screen. Players move the blocks up and down to align three that are alike. Rather than disappearing, the blocks then catch fire and fly off the screen with the blocks on top of them. The objective is to clear the screen and keep it from filling with meteors. It looks like Tetris on acid, which sounds pretty cool to me. Meteos will be released in early March. Hit the link below to stream the video or right click and save it to your computer.

Exclusive DS Systems Start Celebrity Bidding War [ Nintendo ]

Thanks to a celebrity bidding frenzy, Nintendo DS proved to be the talk of the Sundance Film Festival. One-of-a-kind Nintendo DS systems created specifically for the festival were won by comedian Jay Mohr, host of the Sundance Channel's Festival Dailies and the popular show Last Comic Standing, actress Poppy Montgomery, star of the thriller Between, and actor Alan Cumming, also of Festival Dailies and X2: X-Men United. The three won their new custom Nintendo DS units in a silent auction at the Nintendo DS Lounge at the Sundance Film Festival. Mohr, Montgomery and Cumming outbid celebrities like Anthony Anderson of Hustle & Flow, Lisa Kudrow, John Leguizamo, Jason Ritter and Jamie Bell.
Mohr bid a whopping $10,000 for a Nintendo DS with a swirling blue metallic pattern. Nintendo will add $5,000 to his winning bid for a total donation of $15,000 to Mohr's designated charity, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Montgomery bid $2,500 for a stylish green Nintendo DS with gold graffiti patterns, while Cumming bid $1,500 for a wild copper-and-brown one. Nintendo will match both their bids, and will donate $8,000 to their chosen charitable cause, tsunami disaster relief.

Take-Two Signs Exclusive MLBPA Deal - UPDATED [ Reuters ]
|
Take-Two, co-publisher of the ESPN line of sports videogames with Sega, has announced that they have struck back against EA's deals in the football realm, and have signed an exclusive 7-year deal with the Major League Baseball Players Association in order to gain exclusive rights to MLB players in their games starting in 2006. The deal essentially means the end of EA's MVP Baseball series, just as EA essentially ended Sega and Take-Two's NFL series with their similar exclusivity deal. Take-Two also announced that Visual Concepts, the development deal behind the ESPN sports games, has been purchased from Sega. This MLB deal may spell trouble for Nintendo, seeing as Take-Two's sports games have never been on the GameCube before, and it is possible that baseball on the Cube may be a casualty in this situation - except for Mario Baseball, that is.
Update: Looks like Take-Two won't be releasing the new Sega Sports titles as themselves. Take-Two has announced they will form a new publishing company called 2K Games, in order to release the upcoming year's sports games, as well as numerous other titles in development.

Ubisoft Profits Increase [ Ubisoft ]
|
Ubisoft has announced its third quarter sales report, and they total an amazing $231 million. However, Ubisoft isn't stopping there. The company is projecting their fourth-quarter sales to be in excess of $273 million, on the back of such titles as Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 and Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. It looks like the sales of Ubisoft's games are reflecting their immense quality, and with their 2005 lineup looking outstanding, good things look to be in the publisher's future.

From EA With Love? [ MI6 ]
|
According to British website MI6, EA's next Bond outing may be something few would expect. Ever since EA bought the rights to use the old Bond film monikers and stories, they've wanted to do games based on them, as evidenced by their tribute to Bond villains in GoldenEye: Rogue Agent. Now it seems that the next game will take it one step further, with the game being based upon the second James Bond film starring Sir Sean Connery, From Russia With Love, widely believed to be among the best films in the series. The report claims that the game could ship for either current or next-gen consoles, or perhaps both, and is expected late this year or some time in 2006. Keep in mind that I can't confirm any of this, and am at this point unsure how reliable any of the information is. I can confirm that Bruce Feirstein, who worked on the scripts for GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, and the game Everything or Nothing, will be writing the script for the next game, whether it be FRWL or not, and it will most likely not include Pierce Brosnan's likeness, perhaps in favor of a Sean Connery model. Keep it tuned here for any official announcements regarding the project.

In an interview with French gaming magazine Best4Gamers, Camelot president Hiroyuki Takahashi once again confirmed that his team is hard at work on a brand-new surprise game. It was stated, however, that it would not be for the DS, although Takahashi did state that the team would love to work with the new hardware, after they are finished with the upcoming Mario Tennis title for the GBA. However, when asked if the secret game would be the long-rumored third Golden Sun title, possibly for GameCube, Takahashi would not comment. All that was revealed is that the game will more than likely be revealed for the first time at E3 2005. Expect to see full coverage of this surprise when E3 rolls around in May.

Romero (Night of the Living Dead trilogy). Japan's creation of an Information Self Defense Force is deemed a violation of international law and of their own Constitution and ignites rising tensions between Japan, China and North Korea. Facing North Korean and Chinese blockades of shipping across the Korea Strait, Japan requests US assistance in accordance with American obligations under Article 9 of the Japanese Post War Constitution.
Mounting evidence gathered by the I-SDF indicates that the devastation of the Japanese economy on the now infamous ‘Black Gold Day’ may have been caused by intentional Information Warfare attacks. As nations begin to mobilize and the United States activates the USS Clarence E Walsh, the world’s premiere Electronic and Information Warfare platform and dispatches her to the region, Third Echelon gets wind of a small and seemingly unrelated incident that may end up having global repercussion. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat Boxarts [ Nintendo ]
|
Run, jump, swim, battle, swing on vines and collect bananas as you explore beautiful side-scrolling environments that span volcano caves, snowy peaks and fantastic skyscapes. You’ll also have to hitch rides on parrots and killer whales, bounce off pinball-like obstacles and battle tons of bizarre enemies! By linking together moves to build up combo strings, you can collect more and more bananas. The more you collect, the better; you can earn bronze, silver, gold and platinum crests on each level, and collecting crests will open up more and more levels. Control is in the bongos! Tap the right drum to walk right and the left one to walk left. To run, you’ll have to play a drum roll, and whacking both drums at once makes the great ape jump. Clapping or tapping the sides of the bongos makes Donkey Kong emit destructive sound waves and a slew of other things!
Note: The boxarts here show an ESRB rating of RP (Rating Pending) but Nintendo's game page for it does show that the rating will be T for "Cartoon violence." Jungle Beat lands in North America on March 14, one version without the bongos and one version with.
UPDATE - Nintendo's info page for Jungle Beat has just been updated to show that the game is in fact RP. Chances are the game has been submitted to the ESRB for rating and Nintendo either expects it to get a T, or resubmitted it in attempt to get an E. As for now, the rating is still up in the air.

First, Electronic Arts signed an exclusive deal with the NFL, officially becoming the only official football game in town, and practically ending Sega Sports and Take-Two's ESPN NFL Football series. Then, to really rub it in, they signed an exclusive deal with the Arena Football League, in order to make sure Sega and Take-Two didn't get that license. Now, the final nail in the coffin - EA has signed a deal with ESPN to make use of ESPN properties in their sports games exclusively for 15 years - thus stealing them right under the nose of Sega and Take-Two. The EA/ESPN games will begin production in 2006, after the following year's titles, which are still under Sega's control. Yeah, competition...who needs that?

Nintendo of Japan Reveals 1st Quarter Plans [ IGN Cube ]

IGN Cube reports that Nintendo has revealed their plans for early 2005 in Japan. Most of the goings on belonged to the Nintendo DS which has already proven itself a sales sensation with 1.45 million units sold. The Game Boy Advance had a solid season as well, with 500,000 units sold. Also, gamers are reportedly pleased with Nintendo's latest handheld offering - out of 1292 customers surveyed, 52% are very happy with the system, and 39% were pretty happy.
To go along with this, Nintendo showed off some new DS software gamers will be enjoying soon, as well as some release dates. Another Code, as previously reported, will be released on Febuary 24th. Touch! Kirby Mahou no Efude (the new Kirby game where you draw Kirby's path) will hit stores on March 24th, and come with a limited edition colored stylus as well. Other titles that were dated are Yakuman DS for March 24th, PacPix for March 10th, and Harvest Moon DS for March 17th, as well as two third party offerings - EA's Tiger Woods PGA Tour on February 17th, and Bandai's Meteos on February 24th. Nintendo also revealed some GameCube and GBA release dates as well - Star Fox Assault will hit stores on February 24th, Donkey Konga 3 on March 17th, Harvest Moon: Song of Happiness on March 3rd, and Sennen Kazoku on March 10th.

Nintendo has announced that the full Japanese title of the third installment in the Donkey Konga series will be "Donkey Konga 3: Tabe-houdai! Haru Mogitate 50 Kyoku". While your guess is as good as ours as to what that translates to, "Kyoku" does essentially translate to "song" meaning there will be 50 songs to choose from in this game - a big upgrade from previous installments with only 30 songs to choose from. Nintendo will be giving drummers everywhere their first look at the new Donkey Konga game at the upcoming Shogakukan World Hobby Fair in Japan. While no American release plans have been announced yet, it would not be a surprise to hear something soon with the recent announcement of Donkey Konga 2.

Nintendo has announced that Another Code: Futatsu no Kioku (which literally translates to "The Two Memories") will be released for the Nintendo DS in Japan on February 24th. The game, previously known simply as "Another" is a unique adventure/mystery hybrid game that tells the story of Ashley, a young girl whose father mysteriously vanished as he was working on a secret government project codenamed "Another". After receiving a mysterious letter from him, Ashley sets off to the island where he was working on the project, to unravel the clues and solve the mystery of his disappearance. The game looks to merge RPG-style adventure gameplay (using the top screen for conversations) with stylus-controlled movement and puzzles that make use of the touch screen. The game also features high quality anime-style cutscenes. No North American release plans have been announced, but Nintendo would be foolish if they decided not to release this highly intriguing title in the States.

Nintendo has tonight graced us with the official boxart for Pokémon Dash and the official logo for Pokémon Emerald.
In Dash, a novelty racing/puzzle game that will be available for Nintendo DS, players control Pikachu and race against other Pokémon. The objective is to clear all check points and aim toward the goal. In addition to running the courses, Pikachu can cross water terrain by riding on Lapras' back and can also fly using a hot-air balloon. Most of the control is based on using the unique touch screen of Nintendo DS, making this game unlike any previous Pokémon title. No new information on Emerald Version for GBA was given.

Nintendo is gearing up for a February 24th launch of the eagerly awaited Nintendo DS. The handheld will debut at SRP$199.95, and of course comes with embedded messaging and communication tool Pictochat, and for a limited time at launch, the Metroid Prime Hunters : First Hunt demo will also be included. With 2.8 million Nintendo DS units sold in North America and Japan alone, the initial shipment of units into Australia far outweighs any hardware launch in the history of Nintendo in this country.
"With the astounding US and Japanese results we are excited to confirm when this amazing interactive entertainment system will become available to Australian consumers" says Rose Lappin, Director of Sales and Marketing, Nintendo Australia. "At the end of February the Australian public will witness a redefining moment in interactive entertainment that will cement Nintendo as the major innovative force of this industry". The complete Australian DS launch game lineup is set to be announced shortly.

Capcom Reveals PAL Release Dates [ Capcom ]

Capcom has revealed their European release dates for GameCube titles in 2005, and without further delay, here they are. Resident Evil 4 will hit stores on March 18th, Viewtiful Joe 2 on April 2nd, and Killer 7 on June 24th. Killer 7's release date is the most interesting out of all of these - as the Japanese version is set to hit stores on in March, could we be seeing the NA release sometime in April or May, perhaps even before E3? This is of course comes after the recent shots of a new GameCube game featuring the lurvable critters revealed by Famitsu. It will likely be a similar battle and RPG game like the first. Looks like EA wants to make sure they own professional football - all of it. Electronic Arts announced today that they have signed an exclusive, 4-year deal with the Arena Football League to design games for them, starting next year with the 2006 AFL season. This announcement continues the pro football monopoly that EA has been pursuing since the announcement of their exclusivity deal with the NFL, not to mention puts to bed any rumors that Take-Two was pursuing the Arena Football license for use as a replacement for the NFL one. Ah well, there's always the CFL...

This video includes interviews with all the top people who worked on the game.
