I stumbled upon #cubefreaks while chatting in #planetchat one day by /whois'ing random people who seemed at least half way intelligent and that might be in another room with intelligent people as an escape from #planetchat. The people I just happened to /whois were TheBigN and Elzie_Ann. I promptly joined #cubefreaks and soon found out it was to be a website at some point. Of course knowing 99% of fansites are pure shit and never go anywhere I pretty much wrote it off, but as the people there were nice and seemed intelligent enough I stayed and chatted. After about a week of being in there suddenly it said I was banned and I couldn't get in. As soon as TheBigN came online I asked him what had happened and he told me that the chat was now #gamecubecafe. So I joined this new channel and learned of the demise of Cube Freaks and the rise of WiiCafé. Over the next couple of weeks I saw many layout ideas from Marko and was highly impressed. This is when I thought that WiiCafé might just be different from all those other fansites. I waited patiently for the launch of the site to see some of the articles. On July 20th, I was here for the launch and was throuoghly surprised with the well done editorials and reviews. I knew that the site would grow to be huge if given the chance.
About a week later I noticed a new topic in the chatroom. WiiCafé wanted a news guy. I promptly applied for the job, and as soon as Silver found out I knew computers, web design, flash, programming, and was a huge video game addict and computer junky, I was hired. As mentioned in Carl's article, we came up with the concept that WiiCafé was for content, and that news should be secondary, unlike just about ever other video game site on the net. We adopted the slashdot style of news reporting, which is to say we linked to other news sites and quoted magazines and other sources with short summaries. We also decided not to post every single little thing that other sites considered news, as 90% of the gaming audience really doesnt care. After Marko quit I became webmaster by default and once I got used to coding, publishing, linking, ect. Silver and I really began to pump out the news we thought fans would care about.
I'm truly honored to work with all the staff, and while at some points I didn't think we'd make it, all turned out well and we have grown farther then I could have possibly imagined. I'd like to thank Carl and Silver for hiring me in the first place, this is one small step towards my dream of one day being a programmer in the industry. I'd also like to thank all the rest of my fellow staffers whom I've shared the past 6 months with. And of course I can't forget all the fans whom have emailed me nothing but praise and kept our chat and forums alive and thriving since we've started.
